It is crucial for the Catholic Church to have an overview over Church members in order to offer pastoral and liturgical services. In Norway it is furthermore necessary to register members in order for the Church to receive public grants in the same way all other registered faith communities do. The Church must for this reason obtain the full 11 digit personal identity number (date of birth + personal number) for all members; otherwise the Church loses public economic grants.
